1.) How do you use these CAD models to make a wax model?

A service bureau or jeweler with a CNC mill or prototyping machine would build the model. The CNC mills output normal carving wax. There are many types of prototyping machines, each outputting a different physical wax/plastic model. Some can be directly cast and others have to have a mold cast first.

2.) Can I take your models and send them directly to be built in real life?

I think your going to find that most 3D models need to be changed when you get a real life order. I have come to the conclusion though there is no perfect model when it comes to proper physical dimensions. Independent goldsmiths and diamond setters all have a little bit of a different opinion. Something is always different like:

  • The ring size.
  • Different sizes of stones needed to be used.
  • The preference of the goldsmith & diamond setter in which the way model is to be built.
  • he customer wanting something a little different.
  • Changes due to metal type.

3.) Can you provide an STL version of your models.

I have yet to find a valid reason for doing so.

Converting to a STL file is the last step to manufacture in working with a 3D model. You would always want the Rhino .3dm version because that is far easier to make changes to. Your going to find that you need to make changes to the models almost all of the time before manufacture.

4.) What is the biggest use of the Models?

  • Training examples on how to build a similar model.
  • To use parts of the model to build a similar model.
  • Inspiration designing new models.
  • To sell a similar ring. (More food for the Catalog/Gallery)
  • Rarely, to use directly in manufacture.
  • Example models for rendering.

5.) How can I tell the size and the measurements of the gemstones you used in your models?

I have some of this documented that I will give on in the next few months.

Also you can open them in Rhino 3D. It’s free for viewing like this.

6.) Can you direct me to someone that can work with me on models, someone professional?

I am going to try to build a group of people on oDesk.com that can do this. Hopefully I can have this up and running by July 2008.

7.) Do you know of people that can do computer animations jewelry models.

Again I am hoping that provide names of people on Odesk.com

Feel free to email me at Paul@PaulKrush.com if you have any comments or questions.
